Going to Muskoka?

Earlier this week, Dr. Charles Gardiner, the Medical Officer of Health for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, asked area associations to help circulate their letter requesting that individuals postpone travelilng to seasonal residences -Gardiner Letter Gardiner Letter. The board of the Muskoka Ratepayers decided to wait until Premier Ford had his meeting with the Mayors of “cottage country” before we circulated Dr. Gardiner’s request so that we could provide more information.

Premier Ford has now met with the Mayors and has since released a statement reminding the citizens of Ontario that we must remain vigilant and although travelling to your seasonal residence is not prohibited, it is discouraged at this time - Premier Ford's Statement

With the warmer weather and the Victoria Day long weekend approaching, we at the Muskoka Ratepayers understand the desire to come to Muskoka. If you decide to travel from your primary residence, please follow the public health measures as outlined by Dr. Gardiner:

  • Purchase food and medication in your own community before arriving at your property,
  • Stay at your property as much as possible,
  • Limit local trips to essential shopping only,
  • No gatherings of five or more people unless they are all from the same household,
  • Continue to follow proper hand washing and cough hygiene,
  • Continue to physical distance at least 2 metres from other people, and
  • Self-isolate if you develop symptoms.

It is also important to remember that there is a TOTAL FIRE BAN in place which means that there is a BAN ON FIREWORKS in the Township of Muskoka Lakes.

Steve Paikin of TVO recently did an interview on the subject that included Mayor Harding. You can view his full 30 minute interview here - Steve Paikin Interview
